Note (General): 白老町ポロト３遺跡は、ポロト湖南岸のウツナイ川が流出する地点から南南西へ約200m、泥炭土やUs-bで被覆された現標高約６ｍの砂丘に立地する。遺構は、擦文文化期後期～アイヌ文化期の焼土１か所（Ｆ２）、縄文時代中期もしくは擦文文化期前期の焼土１か所（Ｆ１）を検出したが、主体は縄文時代中期（特に中頃～後半）の遺物集中で、土器片集中６か所（ＰＢ１～６）、黒曜石の剝片・砕片集中５か所（ＦＢ１～５）、礫集中11か所（ＳＢ１～11）がある。遺物は土器1,704点、石器等5,042点が出土し、縄文時代中期中頃～後半のものが大部分を占める。中期の土器は、中頃～後半の萩ヶ岡２・３式、柏木川式・大安在Ｂ式～ノダップⅡ式に相当するものが主体である。前半のものは少ないが、サイベ沢Ⅵ式に相当する復元個体が得られた。末葉の煉瓦台式、北筒式に相当するものはわずかである。この他、縄文時代後期、続縄文時代とみられる土器が数点、擦文文化期の土器が約50点得られた。石器等は、剝片・砕片集中との関連をうかがわせる石槍、両面加工石器が目につく。調査結果をまとめると、遺跡の主体時期である縄文時代中期は、砂丘に土壌が発達し始める時期（砂丘固定期）にあたり、中期中頃～後半には、そうした環境の中で、黒曜石の石槍等の製作や、礫集中の礫を錘とした網漁が行われたと推測される。
