Note (General): カモイベツ遺跡は、知床半島基部、斜里町市街地から東に約10㎞に位置し、オホーツク海沿岸の標高３～６mの海岸砂丘上に立地する。これまでに2008・2009・2011・2012年の４次にわたり、斜里町教育委員会が発掘調査を実施し、続縄文時代宇津内Ⅱａ式期～後北Ｃ2・Ｄ式期とオホーツク文化刻文期を主体とする集落跡・遺物包含層が確認された。続縄文時代では、宇津内Ⅱａ式期のベンガラ製作にかかわる遺構・遺物、後北Ｃ2・Ｄ式期の追葬（または再葬）された墓が特徴的である。オホーツク文化期では、竪穴住居群の炉からサケ科の魚骨や中小型陸獣を主体とする骨片が顕著にみられるなど、該期の周辺遺跡とは異なる生業活動の痕跡を示している。（なお当報告書はこれらの内容も合わせて報告している。） 2017年の測量調査を経て、2018年に当センターが残りの範囲の調査を行った。その結果、後北Ｃ2・Ｄ式期の（平地）住居跡および焼土群、オホーツク文化刻文期の小型の竪穴や集石土坑、アイヌ文化期の捨て場・送り場である貝・骨ブロック群を検出し、各期の遺物が出土した。　縄文海進以降の砂丘の形成・発達に伴い、遺跡形成範囲が移行する様相がうかがえる。
