Note (General): 天王山遺跡は、昭和25年に丘陵頂上部における開墾作業時に、遺物が偶然発見されたことを契機に、発掘調査が行われた。出土した遺物は、伊東信雄氏により「天王山式土器」と命名され、のちに坪井清足氏の論考により、広く学会に知られることとなった。　遺跡については、立地、遺物の出土状況などから、祭祀的な場であると調査担当者の藤田氏より示されたが、調査範囲の限界もあり、その性格を特定するには至らなかった。　今回の発掘調査では、丘陵頂上部の平坦地において複数の竪穴建物跡や土坑などの遺構の存在が明らかとなり、また、土器や石器、炭化物などの植物遺体も出土し、天王山遺跡は集落跡であると判断した。
