Note (General): [大手町遺跡（小倉城外堀跡）要約] 本遺跡は紫川西岸の南北に延びる勝山丘陵頂部、標高12mに立地する。近世小倉城の清水口門から、篠崎口門間の総構に伴う堀にあたる。戦前の陸軍施設小倉工廠により、遺構は深いものを除き削平され、遺存していないと考えられていた地域であった。調査の結果、旧地形の遺存する地点が存在することが確認され、古墳時代から中世の遺物包含層が確認された。堀の調査では、関東の後北条氏の築城技術といわれる障子堀が、九州で初めて検出された。堀は絵図のとおり、8間から10間の幅であり、深さ4間以上を確認したが、堀床に岩盤（大辻砂岩）を掘り残し、堀障子（仕切り）を設けていた。堀障子間の竪穴から上級武士階級の所有物である武器類、調度品が出土したが、その中に桐紋のついた真鍮製の南蛮式火縄銃部品がある。城外に拡がる町屋の調査では、溝、通り、井戸、土坑や建物敷地が確認された。
