平山遺跡は東京都日野市豊田三丁目から西平山四丁目にかけて所在する遺跡で、浅川左岸に形成された河岸段丘上に立地する。本報告書は、一般国道 20 号（日野バイパス（延伸））建設事業に伴う埋蔵文化財発掘調査によるもので、同事業の発掘調査報告書としては、東京都埋蔵文化財センター調査報告第 368 集、第 382 集に続き、3 冊目となる。　今回の発掘調査では、旧石器時代をはじめ、縄文時代、弥生時代前期、弥生時代後期〜古墳時代前期、古墳時代後期、古代、古代末〜中世、近世以降の遺構や遺物を確認した。旧石器時代では、平山遺跡で2箇所目となる遺物集中部が見つかり、ナイフ形石器や剥片類、敲石が出土した。弥生時代後期〜古墳時代前期の調査成果では、本調査地点周辺における当該期の集落域の西端を把握できたことが特筆される。　古代では、竪穴建物跡 9 軒と掘立柱建物跡 3 棟を検出した。竪穴建物跡は、古い時期では 8 世紀前葉から中葉、新しい時期で 10 世紀初頭から前半の所産で、奈良時代から平安時代にかけて集落が営まれていたことが確認できた。また、竪穴建物跡から出土した須恵器を中心に産地同定を行ったところ、それまでは東金子窯産須恵器が大多数を占めている状況から、9 世紀末葉辺りを境にして、それ以降は南多摩窯産須恵器が増えてくる状況が見えてきた。
