エルトマン・ノイマイスターの『宗教カンタータ集』は、「教会カンタータ」を確立した詩集として歴史上非常に重要な意味を持つ。その序文は、まずカンタータというジャンルの由来を説明した後、その形式を詳しく記述している。ノイマイスター曰くカンタータとは「オペラの一部としか見えないもの」、すなわちレチタティーヴォとアリアから構成されるものである。カンタータ詩においては、有節詩と異なり詩人に大きな形式上の自由があり、作曲家の側も詩節を気にせずに、歌詞のアフェクトに合わせてさまざまな技法を自由に用いることができる。ノイマイスターはさらに、彼の宗教的な詩が自身の説教の内容を韻文化したものであることを自身の人生を振り返りながら語り、最後にオペラの詩形式を教会音楽に用いることへの批判を想定したうえで、聖書の箇所を挙げながらその正当性を主張する。
