This paper examines the representations of speech in Le Petit Prince and its English and Japanese translations. I have analyzed the data based on the theory proposed by Leech and Short, focusing on the use of NRSA (narrative report of speech act), DS (direct speech), FDS(fee directs peech), and IS (indirects peech). It is found that the English translations prefer the use of NRSA and IS, whereas the Japanese translations tend to use DS and FDS more frequently. It is claimed that the differences are deeply rooted in the characteristics of English and Japanese, respectively.
