p進数体上および関数体上のMahler 関数の研究を通して, 相異なるすべての代数点を例外なく代数的独立な値に写像する多変数関数を構成した。この関数はその特殊化が連分数表示をもち, フィボナッチ数列を例として含む線形回帰整数列により生成される。さらに, この関数を一般化したものについて, 相異なる複数の代数点における値が代数的独立となる必要十分条件を記述した。そのような必要十分条件は２個の代数点間の同値関係であり, それに関する代数点の同値類は巡回群を成す。
