免疫不全マウス(NOD/SCID mouse)大脳への移植実験を経て腫瘍形成を6 ヶ月にわたって認めなかった、安全性の確認されたiPS細胞クローン(38C2; MEF由来、335D1; TTF由来)を用い、当研究室にて独自に開発されたプロトコール(Okada Y, Stem Cells 2008)により神経幹/前駆細胞(以下NSP/C)へと誘導し、損傷脊髄へ移植を行った。その結果、Basso Mouse Scaleを用いた後肢機能評価では、iPS-NS/PC 移植群ではES-NS/PC移植群と同等に、かつコントロール群と比較して優位に回復しており、この機能回復は主にi)移植細胞由来oligodendrocyteによる再髄鞘化、ii)移植細胞由来astrocyteによる軸索ガイダンス作用によりもたらされたと判明した。
