多能性を誘導する4つの転写因子(Klf4, Oct3/4, Sox2, c-Myc)の内在性の発現に着目し、発生サイクルにおいてエピジェネシスが重要な働きをしている始原生殖細胞(PGC)から多能性誘導実験を実施した。どの1つの転写因子のみでも、種々の多能性のマーカーを発現するES細胞様のコロニーが出現し、ヌードマウス皮下移植によって、テラトーマの形成能を有する多能性幹細胞であった。PGCは多能性誘導に必要な転写因子を内因性に発現していることから、より少ない転写因子で、多能性を誘導できることが示唆された。
