インフルエンザウイルスは感染する初期過程で細胞表面の糖鎖と相互作用する。本課題では糖鎖リガンドをペプチド分子に「置換」し、感染過程を阻害する新しい作用機序を持つインフルエンザの治療薬の分子設計の手法を開発した。糖鎖構造を模倣したペプチド分子は複数の亜型に阻害活性を示した。また化学修飾によって高い阻害活性を示すことが明らかとなった。このように複雑な構造を持つ糖鎖を「置換」する方法論は、迅速な治療薬の開発に貢献できる可能性が示された。
