本研究は児童期と青年・成人期の2つの双生児コホートによる縦断調査により、社会性とメンタルヘルスの形成・変化の過程におよぼす遺伝と環境の影響の解明を目指した。認知能力の発達や問題行動の発現、メンタルヘルスの変化に遺伝要因のそのものの発現の変化、ならびに遺伝と成育環境や文化環境との間のさまざまな交互作用が関わっていることが見いだされた。また認知機能の個人差に関わる遺伝子とその発現、さらには脳の構造と機能との関係を明らかにするための研究基盤が確立された。
