心不全では、全身の交感神経活動が亢進することが知られているが、逆説的に交感神経終末から分泌されるノルエピネフリンの心筋内含量は減少している。この現象が交感神経の副交感神経化によるものかどうかを検証するために研究を行った。結果、交感神経を副交感神経に変換する因子として知られる白血病抑制因子とカルジオトロフィン-１発現が、不全心筋において増加し、これらの因子により、心臓を支配する交感神経が副交感神経に分化転換することが明らかになった。
