看護技術教育におけるメタファ使用の可能性を検討する目的で, 現在使用されているメタファについて全国の看護職者190名に調査した。この調査に基づき, A看護系大学生4年生12名を対象に, 「吸引時のカテーテル挿入」と「翼状針を使用した採血」の2項目について, 通常の技術指導を受けた動作とメタファを使用した指導を受けた動作を, ビデオカメラで撮影して動作分析を行った。さらに, 学生の感想を聞き, メタファ使用の効果について比較検討した。結果, メタファは日常生活の援助や診療の補助の場面で使用されており, 筋肉内注射についての内容が最多であった。また, 「吸引時のカテーテル挿入」では"鉛筆を持つように, "「翼状針を使用した採血」では"蝶やトンボの羽を持つように"というメタファは, 看護技術の動作習得に有効であると推察された。
