転写因子HOXB9は上皮間葉転換(EMT)を誘導する因子であり、これにより乳腺上皮細胞にEMTを生じることで放射線照射への耐性が生じた。これは、ATMのリン酸化を介したDNA修復機構がHOXB9陽性細胞では早期に生じ、結果としてγH2AXおよび53BP1のfoci形成が早期に促進されていた。これら現象はsmad4経路を抑制することで阻害されるため、このEMTを介した放射線耐性誘導機序にTGFβ経路の活性化が必須であることが示された。
