南北朝時代の著名な公家政治家にして文化人である、二条良基の生涯を総合的に考察した。とくに北朝の天皇との関係を中心に据えて、新たな資料を発掘することで、伝記研究の刷新を目指した。そこで最も重視されるのが、重臣に宛てて出された天皇・上皇の宸筆書状である。後光厳天皇のそれは宛先を欠くものの、多くが良基宛てであることを判明した。後光厳は良基が観応の擾乱の最中に武家とともに践祚させ、最も親しく輔佐した天皇であるから、その内容は良基の伝記に関わる新事実がきわめて多い。以上の成果は、まずは論文としてまとめて、「菟玖波集前後—後光厳天皇と二条良基」として『日本歴史』856号に発表した。ここでは文和５年（1356）、良基が編纂し、後光厳によって勅撰和歌集に准じられた連歌集の菟玖波集の成立事情を明らかにしている。また、良基の子孫たちの日記の翻刻や逸文集成を進めた。とくに曾孫持通の日記である大染金剛院記について、文明２年（1470）から同五年にかけて断続的に記事がある九条家本を翻刻した。いずれ校訂本文として公刊する予定である。さらに、良基を作者とする説が有力である、増鏡の諸本の調査に着手した。まずは十七巻本の応永本の本文の再検討が急務であると考えられる。そこで京都大学附属図書館・東京大学国語国文学研究室をはじめ、いくつかの所蔵先で伝本の調査を行い、岩瀬文庫蔵本・蓬左文庫蔵本など重要な写本の紙焼き写真を購入した。さらに江戸期の国学者によって、校合されて版本に書き入れられた古写本の本文も活用した。そして一年間の研究の成果として、２月、『二条良基』（人物叢書302）を刊行することができた。良基のみならず、室町後期の晴良まで歴代の当主の動向もあわせて記述した。初めての一般に向けた伝記であり、二条家の関白を室町時代政治史・文化史に欠かすことのできない存在として位置付けた。 This research concerns the study of Nijo Yoshimoto(1320-88) and his descendants.They were were top scholars of the time,and have contributed to co-operation between the Imperial Court and the Shogunate Muromachi Era. Unfortunately, previous studies on them have been scarce; moreover, few of them are based on ample evidence. Hence, this research aims to cast doubt on their credibility by gaining new insights from reliable sources. Note that this research is that of classical Japanese literature und historical materials, the meanings and purposes of which cannot--and perhaps should not--be understood in languages other than Japanese. Therefore, the author strongly recommends that readers of this research follow the argument in Japanese.
