• Note (General): 宇宙の微小重力環境下では、容器(るつぼ)を用いずに、原料を空間に浮遊させて溶融することができるため、容器からの不純物の混入しない高純度ガラスが製造される可能性がある。スペースシャトルSL-Jでは、(1)ガラスの無容器溶融に必要な音波浮遊溶融技術の確立、(2)浮遊溶融させたガラス融液の基礎的挙動の解明、および(3)音波浮遊溶融による高純度ガラスの作製、を目的として宇宙実験を実施した。これら一連の研究目的が達成されることにより、非可視域光を利用した次世代光ファイバー用の超高純度ガラスの開発につながるものと思われる。スペースシャトル内においても10{-4}g程度の残留重力のために、浮遊している物体がふらつく。このため、宇宙実験では音波を用いて、ガラスを一定位置に浮遊保持させ、ハロゲンランプからの光により加熱させる音波浮遊炉を用いて実験を実施した。宇宙実験はラック10の水漏れにより実施が危ぶまれたが、宇宙飛行士の適切な処理とミッションの延長により、予定どおり、3回の実験を実行できた。ガラス原料は、宇宙飛行士の手によって、白金合金製のケージの中にセットされて実験が開始された。このケージには、ハロゲンランプからの光の波長を変換させて溶融しやすくする役割もある。宇宙実験中、音波浮遊炉は概ね良好に機能した。1回目の宇宙実験では、CaO-PbO-B2O3系ガラスを音波浮遊炉内で浮遊溶融させて、音波浮遊溶融技術のデータを取得した。また、ガラス融液中の流れ、成形についての知見を得た。2、3回目の宇宙実験では、CaO-Ga2O3-GeO2系原料粉体球を対象にして実施した。この組成では、溶融温度が1300度Cと高いため、音波浮遊技術については、完全に一点で浮遊保持される良好な状態ではなかったが、原料粉体球を溶融させることができ、冷却によって不純物をほとんど含まない無色透明なガラスを得ることができた。すなわち、世界に先がけて、宇宙で初めて原料粉体から完全なガラスを得ることに成功した。この宇宙実験では、高純度ガラスを得るという目的を最優先させるために、原料粉体からの直接ガラス化を試みた。このため、作製されたガラスにはある程度の泡が含まれていたが、その量は予想されたものよりは少なかった。泡の除去はガラスの製造にとって大きな問題であり、宇宙実験の基礎技術として融液中の泡を取除く方法が検討されていく必要がある。; Since microgravity makes possible to melt raw materials held in air without use of container (crucible), high purity glass without impurities from container could be produced. The experiments to elucidate following items in the space shuttle Space Lab-Japan (SL-J) was performed: (1) establishment of acoustic floating zone melting technology necessary for container-free melting of glass; (2) elucidation of basic behavior of melts fused by floating zone method; and (3) production of high purity glass by means of acoustic floating zone melting method. After completion of a series of these studies, ultrahigh purity glass for next generation optical fibers utilizing light of non-visible region will be developed. Floating objects in the space shuttle sway due to order of 10(exp -4) g of residual gravity. Owing to this reason, the space experiments were performed by using acoustic levitation furnace which floats and holds glass at predetermined position and heats by means of light of a halogen lamp. Although the space experiments became difficult to perform due to water leakage from the rack 10, the three times of experiment completed as scheduled because astronauts took a proper countermeasure and the mission was extended. After the glass raw material was set in a platinum alloy made cage by a astronaut, experiments were started. Also, this cage has role which eases to melt the materials by converting wavelength of light emitted from a halogen lamp. As a whole, the acoustic levitation furnace operated satisfactorily during the space experiments. In first space experiments, data on acoustic floating zone melting technology were collected by making CaO-PbO-B2O3 glass levitate and melt in the acoustic levitation furnace. Knowledge on flow in fused glass and forming were obtained from this experiments. In the second and the third experiments, the experiments were conducted on powder spheres of CaO-Ga2O3-GeO2 raw materials. The state was unfavorable to levitate and hold surely the raw materials at one point in the furnace, because melting temperature was high, 1300 C. However, the powder sphere of raw materials was successfully melted, and colorless and transparent glass with almost no impurity was obtained by cooling. This experiment brought the first success in the world which obtained complete glass from the raw material powder in space. In this space experiments, in order to reach the first object of obtaining high purity glass, direct vitrification from raw material powder was attempted. Although some content of bubbles was included in the produced glass, the volume was smaller than previously expected. As removal of bubbles is serious problem for production of glass, it is necessary as basic technology of space experiments to develop removal technique of bubbles in fused liquid.; 資料番号: AA0004116018; レポート番号: NASDA-TMR-940002 V.2
