Note (General): ｢唐代の伝奇小説は、ヨーロッパの近代的短編にまじっても見劣りしない、常に新しさを失わぬ芸術の結晶である｡メリメ、ホフマン、ポーなどの短編を読み比べると、伝奇の小説技術がいかに豊富であるか、いかに自由自在であるか、またいかにじゅうぶんに加熱され、煮つめられているか、驚かずにはいられない｡不注意に読み流せば、玄怪を好み、幻想を追っているようでいて、実は素朴未熟なリアリズム作品より、はるかに深く現実の人間の本質に突入しているものがある｡｣武田泰淳は｢唐代伝奇小説の技術｣註(1)の中でこのように述べている｡周知のように、中国の小説の歴史は、六朝(3-6C)の｢志怪｣小説から隋唐(6-10C)の｢伝奇｣小説へと展開する。これらの作品は、文字通りの短篇の集積であるが、作者の意識を問題にすると、｢志怪｣は、作者が事実だと考えていることをそのまま書き記したものであり、一方、｢伝奇｣は、作者がフィクション(虚構)を交えることを意識しつつ書き連ねたものである点で、決定的に相違する。
