高野長英が宇和島（愛媛県）に潜伏中に藩主伊達宗城（だて　むねなり）の要請で翻訳したものである。原書は　G.J.Stieltjes “Handleiding tot de kennis der verschillende 　Soorten van batterijen” 1832. である。当館所蔵本は長英の再稿自筆本で、初稿の文字を胡粉で何回も消して書き直した箇所がいたるところにあり、苦心のほどがしのばれる。この本の内容は、砲台の構築方法、砲の配列などである。　　この時の長英は、わずかな給与のため生活は苦しく、つねに酒気をおび生活はすさんでいたらしい。　　本文の「攻城抜的利」（こうじょうバッテリイ　batterij )とは、攻城用の砲台の意味である。
