元治元年(1864)我が国フランス語学の元祖といえる村上英俊(1811-1890)の代表的な仏和辞典。英俊は本書以前にも『三語便覧』『五方通語』等の辞典を編纂しているが、本書はこれらのものとは異なり、右綴じ、横書き、アルファベット順の語彙配列という体裁の変化に加え、品詞の区別、動詞の活用、成句等の面で大きな進展が見られ、本邦最初の本格的な仏和辞典としての評価が高い。　本書は、仕官学校の生徒達に使われたり、フランスへの留学生に携行されたりと。広く使われていたらしい。
