『悲愴』に続くチャイコフスキー交響曲のリニューアル第2弾（第4番はライセンス版で刊行済み）。楽曲解説の執筆は、国立音大教授・森垣桂一。作曲家として実績を積んだのち、改めてサンクトペテルブルク音楽院でチャイコフスキーやラフマニノフなどを集中的に学んだ。これまで論じられることのなかった新しい視点――ロシア古典建築様式や、ヨーロッパ音楽のさまざまな構成法、さらには民衆の憧れの的だった劇場芸術や、ロシア正教の「声」に対する考えなど――を盛り込みつつ、チャイコフスキーがいかに新しい交響曲の系譜を作り上げていったかを詳細に論じる。
付録として掲載するデュナーミクや、速度記号の振幅を示す一覧表も興味深い。第5番は、後期の他の2曲に比べて標題的要素が少なく、冒頭に示される「運命の主題」がさまざまに展開され楽曲全体に統一感をもたらす。古典的な均整の取れた美しい作品として人気が高い。
