「比較認知科学」の最新の研究成果から、動物たちのこころは、これまで考えられていた以上に複雑で豊かなものだということがわかってきた。動物と人間を分ける垣根は、今やどんどん低くなっているのである。動物たちは、決して本能のおもむくままに、生きているわけではない。どの動物も、自身の生き方にマッチしたかたちで情報を処理し、考え、行動を調節して、環境に適応しているのである。
動物心理学の最新の知見をたよりに、動物のこころのありよう、さらには、動物に自己意識はあるか、という哲学的難題に踏み込んでいく。
