現代のネット社会が、接続過剰で息苦しさを増し、圧迫的なコミュニケーションに陥っていくならば、それに対抗する別のコミュニケーションが必要だ。そこで「接続〈と〉切断」を両義的にもつコミュニケーション、つまり適度に切断しながらもつながり続ける具体的な方法として千葉氏が挙げるのが「儀礼的社交」である。接続過剰の状況に風穴を開ける儀礼的社交的空間。「虚」と「実」が反転する空間で、儀礼的社交空間をいかにして組織するか。
