INTRODUCTION Religion in Japan a fusion of Native primitive Animism;Polytheism,and the differentiation of celestial deities;Chinese culture,including Confucian and Taoist elements;Buddhism,particularly the Mahayana;Confucianism,as a Moral Philosophy;Shinto as developed in modern times;Christianity,following both early Catholic and modern missionary contacts.These contributing factors,treated chronologically and with reference to intermediary stages here and there,together with the conclusions drawn therefrom,constitute the outline of this paper.
