- 難読または稀少と思われる日本人の名字のうち、独特の由来を持つもの、特定の地域に集中しているもの、著名人のいるものなどを中心に約14,000姓を選び解説を記す。名字は漢字表記の頭字ごとにまとめ、頭字を代表的な読み方の五十音順に、頭字のなかの各名字は、名字の先頭に記された読み方の五十音順(例:頭字が「秋(あき)」の場合-秋穂(あいお)、秋鹿(あいか)、秋上(あきあげ)…)に排列。巻頭には頭字の「主要音訓索引」、「総画索引」があり、巻末には名字の「五十音総索引」を付す。
