Introduction (Introduction of Reference Books): 本書は、遺伝学の発展を視野に入れながら、農用家畜の品種改良の歴史について解説した資料である。総説のほか、全7章から成り、巻末に参考文献と索引を掲載している。「総説家畜育種の歴史と遺伝学の進歩」では、家畜化しやすい動物種、メンデル以前の家畜品種の改良や、家畜育種の進展と形質遺伝学、細胞遺伝学、統計遺伝学等、遺伝学との関係について概観している。第1～7章では、農用家畜(ウシ、ウマ、ヒツジ、ヤギ、ブタ、家禽(ニワトリ、シチメンチョウ))ごとに、特性と起源、特性と利用、品種改良、改良動向、家畜化による遺伝的変化等、改良品種がつくられた時代背景と品種成立による効果のほか、品種改良における今後の課題や展望についてまとめている。例えば、ウシ(乳牛)の項目では、明治以前の乳利用、明治時代や戦時統制時代の酪農奨励、グローバル化に向けた対応等、日本の品種改良史について、ニワトリの項目では、養鶏の伝播と発達、養鶏産業におけるニワトリの育種・系統について記述している。
