京の都を追放された親鸞は、妻・恵信の故郷でもある越後の地に流されていた。一年の労役を済ませようとしていたころ、地元の民に崇められ、生き仏を称する、外道院の行列に出くわす。まるで世の中がひっくり返ったような、貧者、病者、弱者が連なる光景に、親鸞は衝撃を受ける。文字を知らぬ田舎の人びとに念仏の心を伝えよとの、法然上人の言葉が、親鸞の脳裡に去来する。「自分はなんのためにこの地へきたのか」。しばらくして労役を勤め終えたそのとき、親鸞はついに外道院と対面することを決意する。
