日本では毎年9月になると、感染症専門医試験が行われる。日本感染症学会によって編まれた本書は、今年も多くの受験者によって、試験勉強に利用されたものと思われる。
日本感染症学会専門医研修カリキュラムをみてみると、学ぶべき「病原体」を大量に列挙してある、という印象を受け、やや絶望的な気分になる。これは感染症が「病原体」と「感染臓器」の組み合わせによって評価され、診療されるものである以上、仕方がない面もある。本書はこれらの「病原体」を、疫学や臨床像、治療、予防といった、臨床現場で必要な情報との組み合わせによってより現実味あるものとしており、抵抗なく勉強できる構成となっている。カラーの図版も豊富に含まれており、眺めているだけでも自然に学ぶことができる面もある。
国内には、これほどまとめて感染症の各論を網羅した本はないのではないかと思う。感染症専門医試験受験者のみならず、すでに感染症専門医資格をもっている方の知識のアップデート用に、また単に感染症を勉強してみたいという方にもお勧めしたい一冊である。
