- 「婆娑羅」という言葉をご存じでしょうか。室町時代初期に上級武士の間で猖獗を極めた乱暴な行動様式のことで、 戦国末期に流行った「傾奇」の先輩と考えるとわかりやすいでしょう。この婆娑羅の代表が、本書の主人公、佐々木（京極）道誉です。 『太平記』の中で、楠木正成と並んでもっとも魅力的に描かれるこの男の生涯を通じて、日本人の美意識、出処進退の源流に 迫ろうというのが本書の目的です。 なぜ美意識か。現代で「道」とつく芸術、たとえば茶道や香道、花道といったものの源流は、すべてこの男にあるからです。 花道では池坊専慶が花道書を記す２００年以上も前に、道誉はそれを書き残しています。 また、婆娑羅は「乱暴狼藉」と同意語のように思われていますが、さにあらず。意のままに振舞っても、 そこに確固たる美意識があれば、それは狼藉ではなく、「道」に通じる。ここに筆者の「男の生き方の理想」すなわち「自由」の境地を 道誉で示そうという目論見があります。後半では、婆娑羅の後継者ではあるが、どんどん矮小化されていった傾奇者、 さらに三島由紀夫の自決の美意識も取り上げ、「見事に死ぬこと」しか男ぶりを示すことができなくなった時代の悲哀にも迫ります。 ゲーム「戦国BASARA」などの影響で、BASARAもしくはバサラという言葉は今の若い人たちにも親しみがあるようですが、 本物の婆娑羅を楽しんでみてください。
