【第二巻あらすじ】
ソルボンヌで、カミュの恩師、ジャン・グルニエ教授に師事しつつ、パリ文壇と画壇に評論家としてデビューし、かつ講演家として名声を博す。
「五月革命」後、マルローを隠棲地のシャトーに訪ねて、ジャンヌ・ダルクの正系子孫に引き合わされ、オルレアンの少女を導いた「天の声」は何かとの謎に引きこまれる。
三島由紀夫、ついで川端康成から、それぞれの死に先立ってある信号を送られ、日仏間で秘せる役割を課される。滞仏十一年、日仏文化交流のヒノキ舞台で活動の絶頂期に、思いがけない逆風で一転、逆落としの運命に陥る。
