教皇ヨハネ二十三世帰天後に第二バチカン公会議を継続し、それを全うさせた教皇パウロ六世。その公会議閉会から2年後の1967年12月、同教皇は毎年1月1日を世界平和の日とすると発表します。以後、東西冷戦下に、その代理戦争の様相を呈していたベトナム戦争が泥沼化する中、パウロ六世はひたすら平和の価値を訴え、世界が真の平和を築くことは可能なのだと、そしてそれは人類にとって義務なのだと、人々を励まし続けました。新たな東西の緊張が生じている今、パウロ六世のこれらメッセージにあらためて触れ、平和の尊さについて考えます。
