【はじめに（序文）】
「一人でも多くの病気で苦しむ人々に，緩和ケアを提供したい」という願いは，緩和ケアに従事する医療者共通のものだと思います．そのため，早期からの緩和ケア，がん以外の疾患に対する緩和ケア，救急・集中治療領域での緩和ケアなど，緩和ケアという概念は近年様々な形での広がりを見せています．
しかし，そういった広がり続ける緩和ケアのニーズを満たせるほど「緩和ケアの専門家」と呼べる医療者は多いわけではない，というのが紛れもない現状です．疾患や病期，住む場所などに左右されず，苦痛を抱えるすべての患者さんが十分な緩和ケアを受けるには，「専門家」でなくても，患者と関わるすべての医療者が自分にできる範囲での緩和ケア（いわゆる基本的緩和ケア）を行っていくしかありません．
そのため本書は，基本的緩和ケアを担う医療者，つまり「緩和ケアの専門家ではないけれど，緩和ケアを必要とする患者と関わることがある」または「緩和ケアチームや緩和ケア病棟に患者を紹介することがある」という医療者の皆さんのために書きました．
日々の業務や専門領域の勉強で忙しく，緩和ケアを学ぶためにまとまった時間を確保できない，という方々にも使いやすいよう，本書は現場で「即戦力」として使える実践的な緩和ケアの知識やコツを，コンパクトに見やすくまとめました．
