- 軍縮条約の締結に伴い、空母保有量の対米英劣勢を強いられた日本海軍は、有事の際に容易に空母への改装が可能な潜水母艦、高速給油艦、水上機母艦の整備に乗り出した。給油艦として起工された「剣埼」「高崎」は太平洋戦争開戦前に空母「祥鳳」「瑞鳳」へ、潜水空母「大鯨」は開戦直後に空母「龍鳳」へ改装、水上機母艦として完成した「千歳」、甲標的母艦として就役していた「千代田」もミッドウェー海戦後に空母へと生まれ変わった。本書ではこれら日本海軍の改装空母について、建造の経緯、運用思想、メカニズム、戦歴、関連人物など様々な面から考察、豊富な写真とイラストを交えて詳細に解説する。
