【改訂第2版の序文】
母性看護学領域の対象である女性とその家族を取り巻く環境は，近年大きく変化しています．とくに少子化の影響により，学生が母性看護学実習で受け持てる対象者の数は減少し，それにともなって学習の機会も減少してきています．そのため，限られた実習の中で，より一層効果的な学びが求められる状況にあります．しかし筆者は，日々学生の実習をサポートする中で，いくつかの課題を実感しています．
第一の課題は，母性看護学実習では通常，母児を1ユニットとして受け持ちますが，受け持ちの開始から終了までの間に対象者の状態が大きく変化する点です．学生はその変化に対応して，適時に情報収集・的確なアセスメント・看護過程の展開を行う必要があります．
第二の課題は，受け持ち実習であっても，学生が実際にケアや指導を行う場面が減少しつつあることです．結果として，情報収集・アセスメント・ケア計画の立案といった，記録上での看護過程の展開が中心となる傾向があります．母性看護学では，主に健康な妊産婦と新生児およびその家族が対象となるため，対象者の強みを活かす「ウェルネス志向型」の支援が求められます．しかし，多くの学生は他領域の看護学で「問題焦点型」の支援を先に学んでおり，ウェルネス志向型への思考の切り替えに苦慮し，看護過程の展開に時間を要しているのが現状です．
第三の課題は，受け持ちの対象が正常分娩後の母児に限らず，ハイリスクの妊産婦や新生児，帝王切開分娩後の母児，母児分離のケースなど多岐にわたっていることです．このように多様な対象に対応するため，短期間での看護過程の実践は非常に困難な状況にあります．
