- 稲刈り後の田んぼに水を入れ、冬の間も湛水しておく、あるいは湿地状態にしていくことを冬期湛水水田という。著者らは冬期湛水水田を「ふゆみずたんぼ」と呼びならわし、全国で普及・啓発に努めてきた。「ふゆみずたんぼ」は稀少な動植物の住みかとなり、代替湿地として渡り鳥の中継地となるなど、生物多様性の観点からも注目されている。さらに、「ふゆみずたんぼ」ではイトミミズによってトロトロ層が形成されることで、化学肥料や農薬に頼らない稲作が可能になることがわかってきた。本書は宮城県を拠点に「ふゆみずたんぼ」での生きもの調査に取り組んできた著者が、全国の実践者を訪ね、多様な取り組みを聞き取った記録である。東日本大震災からの水田の復興における「ふゆみずたんぼ」の活用や、生物多様性や渡り鳥の保護になかかわる国際条約において、水田の価値を位置づけるなど、著者自身の取り組みも詳しく紹介されている。
