- In recent years, the rate of participation in higher education has risen remarkably across Asia. Among the various functions of higher education, one of the most crucial is the cultivation of “citizens” who can engage critically with societal issues and take practical action to address them. While citizenship education should ideally be undertaken across all levels of schooling, higher education is particularly expected to foster more advanced and practical forms of citizenship. General education in universities has increasingly come to emphasize not only “traditional liberal arts” but also the development of transferable competencies, exemplified by so-called generic skills, as essential foundations for citizenship formation. This volume examines higher education curricula from the perspective of citizenship education in a comparative context. It focuses on six countries and regions: Japan, Korea, China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, and the Philippines. Specifically, it analyzes the structure and content of general education programs, with particular attention to compulsory courses that all students are required to take. Although the specific features of these programs vary considerably and reflect the unique historical and social contexts of each country or region, they reveal distinctive conceptions of citizenship. By analyzing these features in depth, each chapter elucidates the actual forms and underlying ideas of citizenship education as they are manifested in higher education institutions across Asia. To date, few studies have undertaken a systematic comparison of higher education curricula in Asia from this perspective. This book therefore offers readers the latest insights into this underexplored field. At the same time, there remain many issues that warrant further investigation. We hope that readers will engage critically with the findings presented here and share their candid opinions and perspectives.
