- ※電子版では、紙の雑誌と内容が一部異なる場合や掲載されないページ、付録が含まれない場合がございます。予めご了承下さい。歴史の過去に埋もれた鉄道車両形式や路線などにスポットをあて彫り下げるシリーズ、RMライブラリー。そのなかで、お客様からの復刻を願う声により、合本とし復刻しているのが『RM Re-ライブラリー』です。その第46弾は「日本の蒸気動車」を取り上げます。 蒸気動車とは、鉄道の動力が蒸気機関しかなかった時代に、客車に小型の蒸気機関を取り付け、1両で自走できるようにした車両のことです。この蒸気動車という名称が転じ、後のディーゼルカーなど内燃機関を持つ鉄道旅客車を気動車と総称するようになったのです。この蒸気動車は明治期に都電の前進、東京馬車鉄道にフランス製に蒸気動車によって試験運転を行なった（採用には至らず）ことから始まり、後に国産の工藤式蒸気動車が官営のほか私鉄でも採用されるに至ったのですが、そもそも客車内に蒸気機関を設置することは難が多く、ガソリンエンジンやディーゼルエンジンの内燃機関が開発されると取って代わられ、戦中の物資統制期を除いて、明治から大正期には蒸気動車の歴史は幕を閉じています。本書は蒸気動車の数少ない製造所の公式写真や関係役所への申請図、当時の運輸業界誌への広告など基に、各メーカー、駆動方式、導入会社などから、同車種の歴史を可能な限り紐解いた内容です。～本書の内容～■はじめに●1.外国製車の時代●2.国産車の時代●3.各鉄道・軌道使用例●4.鉄道院→鉄道省→運輸省●5.1940年以降の蒸気動車使用例●6.機関・走行部のみ再生事例●7.客車としての購入事例■おわりに
