• Note (General): type:text; Conflicts between Pedestrians/cyclists and tuning vehicles are very common at signalized intersection. Such conflicts increase the likelihood for a crash to occur. Since a crosswalk is the place designated for pedestrians to cross the road safely, the maneuvering of turning vehicles at crosswalks is characterized by their compliance with the priority rule: in interactions between turning vehicles and pedestrians on a crosswalk, the pedestrians should be allowed to pass first. Accident data reveal that numerous accidents involved turning vehicles and pedestrians on crosswalks. This indicates that turning vehicles do not show yielding behavior to pedestrians properly on crosswalks. Pedestrians and cyclist are vulnerable road users and their safety is at high risk than other road user. It is important to increase driver’s yielding behavior on crosswalk. This is the main motivation of this study.In this study two points are considered as influential factors on yielding behavior of turning vehicles towards pedestrians. One is pavement design treatment and another one is traffic situation. The main objective of this study is to identify the effect of road pavement difference on driver’s behavior during turning maneuver on crosswalk and to get in-depth view of the different traffic situation on turning driver’s yielding or non-yielding decision. When driver move to the crosswalk how different situation and pavement design effect driver’s yielding behavior was investigated in this study.To investigate the effect of brick pavement or red color at intersections on the behavior of left and right turning vehicle and evaluate their contribution to pedestrian safety on crosswalks, three favorable locations for the study were chosen. The study area is located near Nishikawaguchi station in Japan. All the intersections are situated in a residential area. At each of these intersections, one urban road is intersected by three local residential roads. In this study, a comparative safety analysis with three pavement design scenarios was conducted on the basis of the gap acceptance of left right turning cars and the traffic conflict analysis method. This study aims to analyze the non-yielding risky behavior of left turn and right turn driver towards pedestrians and cyclists considering different pavement design treatment on crosswalk or near the crosswalk. Results show that brick pavement is more effective to increase driver’s yielding behavior.To investigate the effect of brick pavement or red color at intersections on the speed behavior of left and right turning vehicle, speed analysis was done. Vehicle speed at three situations are selected to study the speed behaviour of turning vehicle. Three situations are following: At free flow condition on green signal time, at free flow conditions on yellow onset of traffic signal, Accepting gap with pedestrian. Regression analysis shows that for left turn car brick pavement and red colored pavement is equally positive for reducing driver’s speed. But for right turning vehicle brick pavement shows more effective on reducing car speed on the crosswalk at signalized intersection when they interact with pedestrian, without pedestrian.This study also aims to analyze the non-yielding, risky behavior of turning driver towards pedestrians and cyclist at signalized intersection considering the traffic situation around him at the moment when he make the turn. According to priority rule, a driver has to show yielding behavior by making a stop with mild speed towards pedestrian or cyclist when they are on a collision course. A field observation was conducted for nine hours daily (3 weekdays) to observe turning vehicles and pedestrian interaction on crosswalk at signalized intersection in Japan. Each direction was a two-lane, two-way road. Major road has a left turn lane waiting area. At this intersection, left turn vehicle, right turn vehicle, pedestrian, cyclist use the same traffic signal phase. For right turn vehicle separate right turn signal is provided, but right turn can make a turn with the main signal also. Four decision tree model were developed, two for the left turning vehicle decision towards pedestrian/cyclist and the other two for right turning vehicle decision towards pedestrian/cyclist. The dependent variable for each model are driver’s yielding or non-yielding decision. Eleven independent variable for left turning vehicle and nine independent variables for right turning vehicle were initially considered for model formulation. Results show that left turn driver’s decision towards pedestrian is mainly influenced by car’s speed, pedestrian distance from conflict area, pedestrian speed. And left turn driver’s decision towards cyclist is mainly influenced by car’s speed, pedestrian distance from conflict area, signal time, car position on platoon, presence of car front and back side of target car. Results also showed that right turn driver’s decision model is mainly influenced by pedestrian distance from conflict area, car’s speed and pedestrian speed.
