• Note (General): This study proposes a load-sensitive transmission concept that can rapidly switch its reduction ratio. The transmission enables robot joints to move in high-speed during low load and exert high-torque when the load exceeds a preset threshold. Also, the transmission exhibits a passively high compliance during the switching in reduction, providing safety in human-robot interaction. A cable-driven prototype of the transmission is developed for pinching or grasping applications. The output force can be increased up to 10 times in 0.7 seconds. Additionally, an elbow joint prototype with a novel clutch mechanism is developed for load-lifting applications, which need to exert high torque over a longer stroke.
