• Note (General): Heavy metal contamination has become a severe environmental issue, because of the exponential increase in the use of heavy metal compounds in various industrial processes. The occurrence and fate of these contaminants is an important environmental and public health concern. Therefore, the removal of heavy metals from water is a critical challenge that needs to be solved. Beside of these metals, lithium (Li) is known as energy metals, which has surging demands due to increase in the utilization of lithium-ion batteries and other applications. Li is a comparatively rare element, although it is found in many rocks and some brines. Since these concentrations of Li is frequently low, Li is required to concentrate. In this study, separation and concentration of metals using forward osmosis was investigated to compare the electrodialysis as a membrane separation process.
