本論は、「リノベーション」という概念を援用することによって、既存の建築や無形の建築文化を受け継ぎつつ、現代社会にふさわしい建築空間を設計する方法論、つまり「時間の設計手法」を提示するものである。本論では2000年以降の日本において広まったリノベーションという概念を拡張的に援用し、既存建築物だけでなく、建築技術などの既存の建築にまつわる知の発展的継承を図り、さらに豊かな時間を感じられる空間を設計する方法論の基本概念として位置付けることで、建築空間の設計方法論の今日的な展開を試みている。
