Note (General): 金栗村庄屋西田寛忠（号波鏡）の子として山門郡小川村金栗に生まれる。幼くして学問を好み、壇秋芳の鶴鳴堂に入門し、長じて横地玄蕃助の龍山書院で漢学を学ぶ。閉鎖した龍山書院を引き継ぎ、金栗の生家に龍山書院下第一義塾明倫堂（麗川義塾）開設。明治27年に塾内の祠堂に藩校伝習館の孔子像を祀り、春秋二回の祭奠を続けた。また、漆塗細工に巧みで、聖牌祭器等を自製し、現在の伝習館高校での祭奠でも用いられている。明治41年78歳で没した。旧蔵書は昭和12年に九州帝国大学附属図書館に購入された。
