Exploring Japanese Landmarks in Nishiki-e and Photographs

Enryakuji Temple

The head temple of the Tendai sect of Buddhism, founded by Saicho. The entire area of Mt. Hiei, which stands on the border between Shiga and Kyoto prefectures, is considered its precinct. It was burned down by ODA Nobunaga, but was later rebuilt by the Toyotomi and Tokugawa clans. It is registered as a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Site as one of the "Historic Monuments of Ancient Kyoto".
