Exploring Japanese Landmarks in Nishiki-e and Photographs

Kintai Bridge

A five-link wooden arch bridge over the Nishiki River in Iwakuni City, Yamaguchi Prefecture. It was built in 1673. In 1674 and in 1950, it was washed away, but was rebuilt each time using the technology of its original construction. Because of the beauty and rarity of its structure, it is considered one of the three most beautiful or strangest bridges in Japan. It is designated as a National Place of Scenic Beauty.
