- 主な内容
文書の大半は、USSBSの照会に対する日本側の英文での回答又は日本文での回答の翻訳の資料で、ほかに近衛文麿の尋問記録・回想録、駐日ドイツ大使館で接収した電信の翻訳などがある。これらは、謄写版で印刷され、東京のUSSBSのG-2情報課からUSSBS各課に資料として配付されたものだが、若干これらの資料の手書きの原稿を含む。
近衛の回想録の入手の経緯については、USSBS副団長のニッツ(Paul H. Nitze)の回顧録 “From Hiroshima to glasnost: at the center of decision: a memoir” (1989)に言及がある。それによると、真珠湾攻撃の原因を聞き出そうとした近衛へのニッツの尋問が成果なく終った後、近衛の秘書がニッツを訪ねて来て、近衛自身も尋問がうまくいかなかったと思っていると伝え、ニッツへの追加の回答として回想録が提供された、とある(同書 p. 40)。- 資料の構成
