This webpage introduces the Gakken Bunko (Gakken Collection), which is held by the Rare Books and Old Materials Room of the Tokyo Main Library.
1. Overview
The Gakken Bunko, held by the National Diet Library, is a group of about 7,900 items from the collection assembled by Keizo Dohi (1866–1931; pen name Gakken), a professor at the Tokyo Imperial University Medical College. It consists mainly of collections of kanshibun (classical Chinese poetry and writings) by Japanese authors dating from the Edo period through the early Meiji era. Most of the materials were purchased by the National Diet Library in 1950 (Showa 25). The call numbers for most items in this collection begin with “詩文” (Shibun).
Parts of Keizo Dohi’s former collection are also held not only by the National Diet Library but by other institutions, including the General Library, the University of Tokyo (mainly Japanese and Chinese medical works), the Tokyo Medical and Dental University (now the Institute of Science Tokyo) Library (mainly German-language medical works), and the University of California, Berkeley.
