This webpage introduces the Kyubakufu Hikitsugisho (Handover Documents of the Former Shogunate) held in the Rare Books and Old Materials Room of the Tokyo Main Library.

1. Overview

The Kyubakufu Hikitsugisho (Handover Documents of the Former Shogunate) refers to a collection of official documents of the Edo Shogunate that were entrusted to the Imperial Library by Tokyo Prefecture (Tokyo-fu). The documents primarily consist of those compiled by the Machi-bugyosho (Town Magistrate’s Office) to serve as reference materials for official duties. Some documents related to the Hyojosho (Judicial Council), Jisha-bugyosho (Office of Temple and Shrine Magistrates), and Sakuji-bugyosho (Office of Construction Magistrates) are also included. After being received at the Imperial Library, these documents were all reinforced and refurbished with covers added, and they now comprise approximately 9,000 items.
