第一巻 初瀬・桜井・宇陀 ～大和朝廷の源流を辿る～（58分)
万葉集第一巻の冒頭は、五世紀後半に君臨する応神王朝最後の雄略天皇の初瀬朝倉宮の歌から始まる。応神王朝とは河内に中心を置いた王朝であり、その勢力がこの地まで及んだことを物語っているのだろうか。初瀬を旅すると、緩やかな山並みの向こうに、果てしなく大和の国原が広がり、ここから大和を支配下におさめ、その勢力圏を拡大していったありさまが見てとれる。さらに東へ行くと、神武天皇伝承地や倉椅山、その奥には宇陀の安騎野が古代への夢をかきたてる。
第二巻 飛鳥・山の辺の道 ～古代文化のふるさと～（59分)
大和平野のはずれの山間の僻地、飛鳥は平城京や平安京のような広大な平面を持つ都をイメージすると、何と鄙びたところかと思わせる。しかし、この山あいの地から古代文化は発祥した。ぐるりを取り巻く小丘陵の起伏とささやかな平野は、古代文化のふるさとである。古代人はこの地を捨てて近江へ、そして藤原宮へとその政治の中心を移していく。廃墟と化した飛鳥への愛惜の情がうたわれる。
