Note (General): 部門間のパワー関係をめぐって、部門と経営者等がいかなる行動を取り、それが組織をどう変化させるかの研究である。組織設計の支柱となる理論となる取引費用理論とパワーに関する議論である資源依存理論、そして組織変革論などの先行研究をレビューし（第2章）、定性的な研究手法を説明する（第3章）。部門は、自らのパワーを獲得するため、組織内部における関係の構造を組み替えること、そして組織制度自体に働きかけパワーの制度化を図ることを明らかにする（第4章、第5章）。一方の経営者等は、組織制度を通じて部門パワーの配置をコントロールしようとし、これをもって効率性の実現を図ることを明らかにする（第6章）。こうした部門パワーをめぐる部門と経営者等の行動が、組織の漸進的な変化をもたらすとともに、ロックインが生じた場合には非連続的な変革を生じさせることを明らかにする（第7章）。
