Note (General): 中山定親は室町時代中期（1401～1459）の公卿で、父は正二位権大納言中山満親、母は伊予守満貞の娘。故実家として知られ永享8（1436）年武家伝奏となる。嘉吉3（1443）年権大納言となり弾正尹を兼ねる。文安3（1446）年正二位に叙されたのち辞職し、同5年出家した。法名祐繁。「薩戒記」は定親の日記で「定親卿記」「霜台（ソウタイ）記」等ともいう。記名「薩戒」は「さだちか」の唐風反名（カエシナ）であり、「霜台」は弾正台の唐名で兼官弾正尹によったもの。応永25（1418）年からはじまるが、日次記（ヒナミキ）は嘉吉3（1443）年までで、欠落が多く、完存する年次は応永32（1425）年、同33年の2年間。ただし抜書・部類記・文書案等を含めれば、文安5（1448）年までに及ぶ。幕府と将軍に関する記述も多く足利義持・義教期を知る重要史料の一つである。本書は、応永25（1418）年から永享11（1439）年で欠落多く、抄・部類・抜書等を含む。表紙は薬袋紙（室町時代以来、薬袋に用いられた特殊な紙で敷物や書物の表紙にも使われた）。
